A new Coalition of grassroots climate organisations, representing tens of thousands of people has launched today in preparation for Australia and the Pacific hosting COP31 next year.
Signalling to the Australian government that those on the frontline of the climate crisis are organised, ambitious and demanding a phase out of coal and gas in the next 10 years, the Climate Justice Coalition will build power in streets and communities to ensure this global moment is Australia’s wake up call that gets us on the path to a coal and gas free future.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition, 350.org Australia, 350 Pacific, Our Islands Our Home, Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network and Tipping Point have joined forces to demand a just transition away from coal and gas exports, and invite the Australian public to join the fight to demand this from our leaders.
Kelly Albion, Convenor of the Climate Justice Coalition said, “Our Coalition represents national organisations with thousands of committed volunteers building power in their communities to end fossil fuels fast, fair and forever. People power has kept massive fossil fuel projects at bay, but now its time for real leadership from the Australian government to make a plan that keeps our communities safe from the worsening climate crisis.
“Australia is the second largest exporter of coal and gas in the world, fuelling the climate crisis here and around the globe. We have a responsibility to speed up the decline of these exports to make sure that First Nations people, Pacific Islanders and communities across the country can continue thriving in the place they call home.
Together, the Coalition will build public and institutional support for an end to coal and gas this decade, we demand:
- A fast and fair phase out of all coal and gas mining and burning by 2031-2035
- A just transition for workers and communities
- Protect all communities here and in the Pacific from unnatural disasters
- End public subsidies and make big polluters pay for the climate damage they cause
- Kick fossil fuel lobbyists out of COP and out of Parliament
You can endorse these demands and stand on the right side of history by signing onto the Pact that we will deliver at COP31 as our expectations of the Australian government as they embark on this historic presidency, using the power we’ve built together across the country to secure real progress towards a safer future for everyone.
